2021 – UMAP Year In Review

The International Secretariat sends warmest wishes for the festive season around the world.  As we approach the New Year, we hope you will join us in acknowledging the challenges brought by 2021, celebrating our many accomplishments, and looking forward to what 2022 will bring!  Below, please find a summary of some of UMAP’s many accomplishments in 2021, as well as some statements in honour of UMAP’s 30th anniversary.  More on our anniversary is available from the UMAP Turns 30 webpage!

ITS Surabaya: “CommTech Online” virtual courses

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya Indonesia is offering “CommTECH online,” an opportunity for university students, academics, and professionals from all over the world to learn about community and global issues through a variety of insightful but fun activities virtually. The program includes courses & discussion, virtual social engagement, Indonesian language courses  and for sure learning about Indonesian culture.

The aim of this program is to facilitate an opportunity to better understand ITS’ expertise in technology implementation within the society. It will also open up an opportunity to exchange ideas and develop a mutual goal for the future of our community.

Thailand UMAP Micro Credential Program, Phase Two

King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) is now launching Phase 2/Strand B of the Thailand UMAP Micro Credential pilot program, which aims to fulfil the needs of learners who seek to upskill and reskill, develop needed specific competencies, or pursue lifelong learning. Each program can be considered equivalent to 1 credit. However, any approval of credit transfer is dependent on the student’s home university.  Strand B offers programs in Data Visualization (starting February 2022), Persuasive Presentation (starting June 2022), and Cultural Dimensions in Communication (starting July 2022).  All students currently enrolled at UMAP member institutions are eligible to participate at no cost! UKM Global Webinar Series: Embracing Language and Culture through Internationalization

This webinar aims at exploring how language and culture-based programs are being offered in universities in Japan and Malaysia. Discussion will focus on the nature of programs and activities, the intercultural component of the programs, the focus and aims of the programs and the success stories or challenges faced in organizing the programs.

Japan-Multilateral COIL/VE Project: 21st Century Skills

Kansai University’s Institute for Innovative Global Education (IIGE) is pleased to announce their newest initiative, the Japan-Multilateral COIL/VE Project.  The inaugural program takes the place of the previous UMAP-Kansai/IIGE COIL project, which was offered for the past three years.  This  new multilateral COIL Project is now open for student applications, with a deadline of January 14, 2022.  The program, focusing on “21st Century Skills,” will take place online February 7 to March 28, 2022.  

UMAP student participants must be nominated by their institutions.  Institutions must contact their National Secretariat to request the application spreadsheet and submit it on behalf of their of interested students, no later than January 14, 2022.  Institutions experiencing difficulty in connecting with their National Secretariat may request this information from the International Secretariat.

Institutions may nominate up to 10 students each.  A total of 60 UMAP students may be selected.   Instructions for completing and submitting the spreadsheet are included on the spreadsheet document.   Applications will be reviewed and selected by Kansai/IIGE.  Applicants will be notified of the results by January 25, 2022.  Additional information can be found at:  https://kuiige.wixsite.com/j-mcp
