Theme 1: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Sustainable Development Goals are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 for the year 2030. The SDGs are part of Resolution 70/1 of the United Nations General Assembly: “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” The participants of this program will consider this universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. While visiting various ports during the cruise, they will generate a glocal (global and local) solution to contribute to the 17 goals as their small group research project.

Theme 2: Glocal (Global and Local) Topics
In this program, participants will visit various ports of call throughout Japan where they will have the chance to interact with private companies and organizations that offer products and services particular to each region. Through sampling the unique characteristics of each region, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the diversity abounding within the country, forming connections with the world through efforts to introduce the regional charms of Japan to their home countries in the form of images, videos, blogs, and articles in English and their native language.

Exposure Programs [7 cities]
(itineraries are tentative and are subject to change)
At ports of call, participants take part in exposure programs. These programs invite students to learn from people who are directly affected by these issues. By listening to personal accounts, participants grow in empathy and nurture a human-centered approach to global issues.

★COIL Engagement: Aligned with the COIL Initiative, students will take part in a series of virtual lectures by navigators from around the world at the ports where the cruise will dock throughout the trip. Virtual navigators (TBA) will share their expertise on social business entrepreneurship with various SDGs in mind. Lectures and discussions will address a range of global issues, including but not limited to, peace, human rights, and the environment.

★Localized “Cool Japan” Discovery: Through collaboration with a local tourism association, we will learn about the areas in Japan where the cruise will stop, interact with the community, and experience the local culture in order to promote the various regions and their specialties in the students’ home countries as “cultural ambassadors.”

★South Korea, Busan: In addition to the many local ports where the cruise will dock in Japan, students will spend half a day in Busan, the economic and cultural center and second-most populous city in South Korea. There they will visit a university (TBD) where a lecturer will provide lots of food for thought on contemporary international affairs in Asia, including issues of nuclear security and the national democratization movement. Students will be encouraged to discuss what it means to bring about the changes that they wish to see.

★Russia, Vladivostok: Students will also take part in a full day of fieldwork in Russia, where they will visit a start-up company in Vladivostok, as well as attend lectures by a professor at Ulyanovsk State University (via COIL method) and discuss regional security challenges with local students. They will also visit an interesting rehabilitation training hospital.

Onboard Seminars [90 minutes x 10 sessions]
Onboard, participants will engage in discussions, workshops, and roleplays to deepen their learning. By rigorously exchanging opinions with other participants from diverse backgrounds, participants learn to consider a wide range of opinions and propose potential ways forward.

Action Challenge [2 Projects / group]
1000 passengers from various countries travel together on the ship. In groups, students pick an issue, come up with a vision, set targets and goals, and plan and implement their own actions. These experiences can give participants the confidence to be agents of change in the future.

Experts in fields related to the program themes will join the program as “(onboard) navigators.”
Navigators facilitate students’ learning as resource persons, facilitators, and mentors. This year’s navigators include:

*International students nominated by UMAP’s pledged institutions are expected to participate in the 4 week long pre-program session (COIL, Collaborative Online International Learning) and UMAP-COIL Osaka Seminar. Those who fail to participate in this pre-program may not be eligible for the scholarship. There will be 4 consecutive virtual sessions scheduled. The participants are given an account to an interactive platform provided (called “ImmerseU”).

Program Cost
For Japanese students: JPY 230,000
For International students: JPY 150,000 (USD1350.49) ～ JPY 170,000 (USD1530.57) (eligible for scholarship, check the information below)
USD 1 = JPY 111.07 (as of April 11 2019)

Included are 1) full program and tuition costs; 2) all expenses related to the exposure programs; 3) accommodation and meals onboard Peace Boat; and 4) other miscellaneous expenses.

Additional fees will be charged as follows upon their arrival: 21,600 JPY for port charges, 10,000 JPY for onboard tips, and 2,000 JPY for international tourist tax.

NEW to this program only: Honors Scholarship
International students with a strong statement of purpose whose academic performance the UMAP-COIL Committee recognizes as superb, will be granted:

Approximately 80,000 JPY JASSO scholarship. The final decision on the total amount of the scholarship to be granted will be announced by the end of May to each accepted applicant.

※International students who will receive a JASSO scholarship (80,000 JPY) must participate in this Osaka program. For those who do not wish to receive the scholarship and Japanese residence, this program is optional.

UCTS approx. 4 credits (Japan/US), ECTS 6 credits.

※Kansai University courses are typically 2 credits for Japanese students, but according to the outline above (UCTS) it will correspond to 3 credits or more. This can be recorded on student transcripts (certification of credit hours).

Eligibility
Students between the ages of 18 and 35* who are currently enrolled in academic institutions participating in UMAP’s pledged institutions or whose Pledge of Agreement (PoA) is scheduled to be confirmed during 2019, with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and adequate command of English, sufficient to understand lectures and participate in discussions, is a minimum requirement (desired English language proficiency: TOEIC790-860, TOEFL iBT87-98, TOEFL ITP 67-601 and above).

*Students should meet the age requirement at the time of departure, not necessarily the time of application. Special exceptions may be made for outstanding candidates.

Visa Requirements
Participants should prepare the necessary short-term visas (Korea, Russia) prior to departure. International students will also need to prepare the necessary visa for entry into Japan. A Peace Boat delegate will contact individuals directly with detailed information on visa application procedures appropriate for their country.
